NAILED DOWN // EVEN STILL

you

were the poem i thought of in the middle of the night

Convinced i didn’t need to write you down

because

there was no way i could forget something so lovely

there was no way it could leave me

i always wanted to memorize your smile

like that last time you know you’ll see the shore

or mountain ranges dissapearing in the review mirror.

i desperately studied the creases of your laugh

but something in me knew

what i’d remember is

the way you stuff your hands in your pockets when you walk away

the way your head hangs low when you are resolute.

you

were hurt that collided into me as i turned the corner

i had no time to prepare for the shock

you

were the late sound of the firework exploding

you

were sweet words in my ear while your hands nailed my feet to the ground

you

were the kindest executioner & the greatest twist ending.

i didn't see you coming

but i never saw you leaving

even still

what causes my heart to get stuck

Throbbing in my throat is that

the one i still want to make laugh

nailed me to the ground—

left with all those sweet words

Numbing a pain i know will come

even still

even still

this forever your song in my mind: even still.
